Fine Lines & Wrinkles

What is it?

What you see as fine or deep creases on the skin’s surface are external signs of damage to the supporting structure below the surface of the skin. The primary structures that support the surface of the skin are collagen, elastin and glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). When one of these supporting elements is damaged, skin loses its strength and resilience. It then begins to sag under the weight of gravity.

How did I get it?

Simply getting older can cause fine lines & wrinkles.  But, natural aging accounts for substantially fewer wrinkles than you might expect – approximately 5-15% of the lines we see in our 50’s and 60’s.

Sun damage (photodamage) is the most common cause of fine lines & wrinkles.  Ultraviolet radiation from the sun triggers the production of enzymes in the skin that essentially eat the collagen, elastin and glycosaminoglycans (GAGs).  UV radiation also triggers the production of free radicals that wreak havoc on these supporting tissues, causing all sorts of damage including the breakdown of collagen, elastin and GAGs.

Muscle movement can also cause lines (called “dynamic lines”).  Examples of these are worry lines on the forehead and frown lines between the eyebrows (commonly referred to as “11 lines”).

How do I get rid of it?

Your best solution is to avoid sun damage.  Use good sun protection – year round – and reapply frequently when outside.  Also, wear a hat, sunglasses and light long-sleeves.  The pure retinol in MD Complete Advanced Wrinkle Corrector can help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, smooth skin texture, and even skin tone.
