Beautiful Skin.

Fine Lines occur when the skin’s underlying supportive structure (collagen, elastin) begins to weaken and gravity pulls on the skin. Fines lines & wrinkles also appear as the skin thins from loss of hydration and elasticity.

Key Ingredients

  • Retinoids

Retinoids—the family of Vitamin A—are the gold standard ingredient in dermatology. Retinoic Acid, also known as Tretinoin, and Retinol are the most effective and reliable ingredients in this family. Avoid derivatives like Retinyl Palmitate and Retinyl Acetate as they are nowhere near as effective.

  • Vitamin C & E

Vitamin C improves the appearance of fine lines and supports other key ingredients like Retinol and Tretinoin. It’s even more effective when combined with Vitamin E.

  • Alpha Hydroxy Acid

AHA’s, like Lactic Acid, Mandelic Acid and Glycolic Acid, help reduce the appearance of fine lines. These acids increase skin cell turnover, which signals an action that improves skin condition. But be careful not to over exfoliate. AHA’s require very low pH (high acidity) to be effective. Too much exposure can damage the skin barrier and make you more prone to irritation with other ingredients and products.

  • Peptides

Peptides are relatively short chain proteins that are used by cells to signal other surrounding cells, and play an essential role in the repair and renewal processes in our body. Consequently, they have become of great interest to formulators. Clinical data confirms they can play an important role in improving the appearance of fine lines. There are many different Peptides, and our favorites (which have strong clinical research and support) include Palmitoyl Tripeptide-5, Palmitoyl Dipeptide-5 Diaminobutyroyl Hydroxythreonine, Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-7, Palmitoyl Oligopeptide, Palmitoyl Dipeptide-5 Diaminohydroxybutyrate.

  • Niacinamide

Vitamin B-3 is another supporting actor—multitasking in nature—that improves skin texture to help reduce the appearance of fine lines.

SkinPhysiology

The surface of your skin (the epidermis) is supported by a network of proteins in the dermis that give your skin structural support, elasticity and plumpness. Over time, sun exposure, stress and other toxins (smoking, pollution, etc.) will break down these tissues resulting in a thinning of skin, a loss of elasticity and sagging. Gravity does the the rest to create fine lines and wrinkles.

The most important elements in relation to fine lines in the dermis are collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. Collagen acts like columns to provide lift and structure to skin. Elastin acts like rubber bands to give skin its ‘snap’ and bounce. Hyaluronic acid acts like sponges, holding up to 1,000 times their weight in water to plump skin. Your body constantly produces new collagen and hyaluronic acid, but this production slows as you get older.

SkinCareTips

The gold standard dermatologist approach to addressing fine lines is using a Retinoid—either prescriptive Tretinoin or a high potency Retinol. Tretinoin jumpstarts production of collagen and hyaluronic acid. It takes time to see results (at least 60-90 days), but the results are dramatic with consistent use. And, even more appealing, the results continue to improve over extended use. Patients who have used Tretinoin or high levels of Retinol for over a decade tend to have a much more refined, polished skin texture with fewer visible fine lines and wrinkles.

Addressing fine lines and wrinkles is hard work, so dermatologists typically recommend a wide assortment of multitasking ingredients that work together to deliver better results. Dermatologists also often recommend seasonal peels that provide bother short term and long term benefits. We like in-home progressive peels, which are applied over three consecutive days. They are more gentle than traditional peels, but have shown to deliver impressive results.
