Why You Should Use a Retinol in Every Season

Summer—for many, it’s arguably the most wonderful season of the year. It’s a time to kick back, relax and enjoy the warmer weather, extended hours of daylight, and all of the fun festivities.

Did you know sun is the primary culprit of accelerated aging (think fine lines, uneven skin tone, uneven and rough skin texture) and the appearance of dark spots? Even though you may be trying to achieve that coveted bronzed skin, are permanent lines and wrinkles really worth the temporary tan?

The sun will deplete your skin of its antioxidants and fatigue its immune system. (Yes, your skin has its very own immune system.) Think of it this way. Just as you probably need a cold, refreshing glass (or two) of water after a long day in the sun, your skin also needs that same kind of replenishment. In this case, the skin needs to be restored with high levels of antioxidants.
But, we get it. We understand a multiple step system in the midst of a busy summer is not always practical. However, the bottom line—taking care of your skin is always worth it.
So, we’ve made it easier for you and have outlined the perfect summer skincare routine, so you can still enjoy the sunshine without the lasting consequences.
Step 1: Cleanse.
Once a day, in the evening, wash your face with a creamy, non-foaming cleanser. Our preference—Restoring Cleanser. Regardless of whether you’ve spent your day in the office, at the lake, or outside with your kids, you want to ensure you’re gently removing the accumulated dirt and oil (and, hopefully, sunscreen) from the surface of your skin. In the morning, simply rinse your face with warm water and, for an exfoliating effect, lightly buff with a washcloth.
Step 2: Boost.
Let’s first dispel the common myth that you can’t wear retinol in the sun. You absolutely can. And you should.
We love nutrient-rich, oil-based boosters because they absorb so quickly. In fact, did you know your skin is waterproof? Many brands formulate their retinol serums with cheap filler ingredients.
